This quote motivated me to read this book: “The authors put forward a radical new way to assess company performance: [the] batting average-a measure of how often competing objectives are achieved at the same time”. In today’s business world it’s tough not to be an economic determinist and not to think of our environments in terms of trade-offs and constraints. Author’s Dodd and Favaro offer that “successfully running a large company means being able to understand the tensions between profitability and growth, short-term tactics and long-term strategy, and the whole against the parts. The best path, according to the research presented here, is not to try and choose between objectives but to seek solid results in every area” (Parker, 2009).
Though the book focuses on the grand idea, and not necessarily the practical implementation, I thought it was worthwhile in terms of promoting break-out thinking, and offering a creative performance indicator, or would that be an indicator for creative performance. It’s a weekend read.
If you've read it, let me know what you think.
